Kwita Izina 2025 – Celebrating Rwanda’s Gentle Giants in Style

Rwanda’s most celebrated conservation event, Kwita Izina, is back for its landmark 20th edition this September—and it promises to be bigger, more meaningful, and more memorable than ever. If you’ve been looking for the perfect blend of cultural heritage, world-class celebration, and breathtaking wildlife encounters, this is it.

What is Kwita Izina?

In Kinyarwanda, Kwita Izina means “to give a name.” It’s a cherished tradition in Rwandan culture—naming a newborn in the presence of family and community. Since 2005, Rwanda has extended this tradition to baby mountain gorillas, turning the ceremony into a global platform for conservation awareness.

The event honors the remarkable individuals and communities protecting the critically endangered mountain gorilla. To date, 397 gorillas have been named, each with a story reflecting their heritage, character, or the hopes of the people protecting them.

Why 2025 is Extra Special

After a pause in 2024 due to the Marburg virus outbreak, Kwita Izina 2025 will celebrate 40 baby gorillas—including those born in the last two years. On Friday, 5 September 2025, conservationists, dignitaries, celebrities, and community leaders will gather at Kinigi, on the foothills of the Virunga Mountains, to name these newborn ambassadors of the wild.

This year’s theme—“A legacy of community-centered conservation, securing a sustainable future for all”—recognizes the deep partnership between nature and the people who live alongside it. Expect to see not only the naming ceremony but also green agriculture initiatives, cultural performances, sports events, and conservation-focused projects in Musanze and Kigali.

Notable Highlights This Year

  • 29 Aug – Community project launches in Kinigi
  • 3–4 Sept – Local sports and cultural concerts in Musanze
  • 3–14 Sept – Familiarization trips for media and tour operators
  • 5 Sept – Main naming ceremony in Kinigi
  • 6 Sept – Golf tournament & conservation gala in Kigali

In previous years, celebrity namers have included Sir David Attenborough, conservation icon Dr. Jane Goodall, football legend Didier Drogba, and global leaders. Expect similar VVIP appearances this year—names that make international headlines.

Fun Facts About Mountain Gorillas
  • There are just over 1,063 mountain gorillas remaining in the wild, with Rwanda home to a significant share in Volcanoes National Park.
  • They live in the high-altitude forests of the Virunga Massif, between 8,000 and 13,000 feet above sea level.
  • Each named gorilla becomes part of an internationally recognized conservation record, helping scientists track and protect them.
  • The ceremony itself features traditional Rwandan music, dance, and a bamboo stage designed in the shape of a silverback gorilla.
